Ana María Stekelman estudió Danza Moderna en Buenos Aires con  Paulina Ossona y Renate Schottelius y en Nueva York en la Escuela de Danza de Martha Graham.
En 1968 ingresó a la Compañía de Danza de Oscar Araiz y en 1972 al Opera College (Dance and Music Research ) Fue Miembro Fundadora del Ballet Contemporáneo del Teatro San Martín y Directora Artística de la Compañía desde 1977 hasta 1981 y nuevamente desde 1988 hasta 1990. Fue la primera Directora del Taller de Danza del Teatro San Martín, creado por Kive Staiff en 1977.
Fue invitada al American Dance Festival en 1976, 1978 y 1990.
Desde que creó su Compañía “Tangokinesis” (1992), profundizó su investigación de la fusión del Tango con la Danza Moderna. Con ella giró por el mundo actuando en los más importantes Festivales: Jerusalén, Otoño de Madrid, Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, Colorado Dance Festival, American Dance Festival, World Financial Center de New York y en dos oportunidades en el Kennedy Center. Fue la única coreógrafa argentina invitada a cerrar el Festival de Avignon en la Couer d’honneur del Palais des Papes (1999). Presentó a su Compañía junto a Julio Bocca en la Opera Garnier de París, en el estreno mundial de “Consagración del Tango”.
Ana María Stekelman creó obras para diferentes Ballets del mundo, entre otros, Ballet Stagium de Brasil; Ballet Du Nord de Francia; Ballet dell’Opera de Roma; Ballet Nacional de Chile; Ballet Estable del Teatro Colón.
Para Julio Bocca creó numerosas obras: “Concertango”; “Consagración del Tango”; “Mambo Suite”; “Piazzolla Tango Vivo; “Bocca Tango”; “Repercusiones”; “Macbeth”; “El Hombre de la Corbata Roja”.
Ana María Stekelman convocada  por Carlos Saura coreografió escenas de la película “Tango”, recibiendo por la misma el American Choreography Award en Los Angeles, Estados Unidos.
En Abril de 2002 , su Compañía Tangokinesis fue elegida para protagonizar un documental producido por el canal ARTE de Francia.
En Septiembre de 2003, su compañía fue invitada por el Hebbel Theatre para presentar en la plaza Marlene Dietrich, Potsdamer Platz, “Tango, Vals, Tango”.
En Diciembre 2003-Enero 2004 junto a su Compañía regresó a U.S.A para presentarse en el Kravis Center de West Palm Beach y en el One World Theatre de Austin, Texas.
En Febrero 2004 realizó con Tangokinesis una gira por Italia y en Junio regresaron a ese país para presentar en el Teatro Bellini de Catania, Sicilia, “Tango, Vals, Tango”.
En Junio estrenó la obra “Bésame” para el Ballet Contemporáneo del Teatro San Martín de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.
En Agosto 2004 se estrena en Hannover, Alemania la ópera “Tango mon amour” de Jorge Zulueta y Jacobo Romano en la cual tiene a su cargo la Dirección Coreográfica, con la actriz Hanna Schygulla en el rol protagónico y con los bailarines de la  Compañía Tangokinesis.
En Noviembre de 2004 estrenó en el Teatro Maipo “Lentejuelas - Gershwintango” obra creada para su Compañía, con la cual también se presentó en el Festival Internacional de Danza Contemporánea en Diciembre en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, donde además estrenó “ Bolero”de Ravel.
En Marzo 2005 realizó una gira por Italia. En Mayo del mismo año es convocada por el Ballet de Asunción del Paraguay para el montaje – reposición de la obra “Bésame”.
Invitada por el afamado Festival Jacob’s Pillow viajó a Massachussets, U.S.A. en Agosto 2005, donde ofreció un curso de Danza Contemporánea  dentro del Programa de Jazz  que dirige Chet Walker.
En Agosto su Compañía “Tangokinesis” estrenó en el Teatro Maipo, un nuevo programa integrado por 3 obras de Stekelman: “Garello Tango” ; “Cotillón” y “Bolero”.
En Octubre, Julio Bocca estrenó 2 obras creadas por Stekelman: ”Cruz y Ficción” y “Tango Brujo”.  También en Octubre  se estrenó “Bathory” historia sobre la Condesa del mismo nombre que la coreógrafa relata a través de 3 personajes.
A comienzos del año 2006 Ana María Stekelman viajó a Roma, Italia, convocada por el Director Alfredo Arias para asumir la Dirección Coreográfica de la ópera “Drácula in Love”.
En Marzo 2006 su Compañía Tangokinesis realizó una gira por U.S.A. y Canadá.
En Agosto 2006 viajará a Versailles para asumir la dirección coreográfica de “Las Bodas del Rey Niño” con dirección general de Alfredo Arias.
Stekelman fue convocada nuevamente por Julio Bocca para la realización de la obra “Adiós Hermano Cruel” con la cual el primer bailarín argentino cerrará su brillante carrera.
En Agosto de 2006 viajó a Versailles para asumir la Dirección coreográfica de “Las Bodas del Rey Niño” con Dirección General de Alfredo Arias.
En Noviembre asumió la Dirección Coreográfica del film “La Bella Otero”, co-producción Argentino-Española dirigida por el cineasta español Jordi Frades.
En Abril de 2007 con su Compañía Tangokinesis realizó una gira por el norte de Italia que finalizó en Alemania en Tanzhaus Theater en Düsseldorf.
En Junio estrenó en el Teatro Maipo de la ciudad de Buenos Aires el espectáculo “Desfile” integrado por las obras: “Concierto de Nácar” “Tangokinetic Molpai” y “Desfile”
En Julio regresó a Italia con su compañía para hacer presentaciones en Roma, Nápoles, y Florencia , entre otras ciudades italianas.
En Agosto Stekelman viajó a Francia invitada por Europa Dance para hacer una nueva versión de la obra “Pulcinella” con música de Pergolese con arreglos de Igor Strvinsky y con escenografía y diseño de vestuario de Pablo Picasso.
En Septiembre su compañía realizó una gira por Grecia y en Octubre por México.
El año 2008 lo comenzó con la creación de la obra “Felicitas” para el Ballet Argentino que se estrenó en Mayo en el Teatro Opera de la ciudad de Buenos Aires y que actualmente está presentándose en Madrid, España.
En Abril viajó con Tangokinesis para presentarse en el Teatro Solís de Montevideo, Uruguay.
En Mayo su compañía realizó una Gala especial en el Hotel Panamericano de la ciudad de San Carlos de Bariloche.
En Mayo Ana María Stekelman viajó a Moscú, especialmente invitada por los organizadores del PRIX BENOIS DE LA DANSE nominada por su Ballet “Adiós Hermano Cruel”. La ceremonia tuvo  lugar el 6 de mayo en el Teatro Bolshoi de Moscú.
Actualmente se encuentra ensayando con su Compañía Tangokinesis las escenas de la película TETRO
del Director cinematográfico Francis Ford Coppola que se filmará en Septiembre en Alicante, España.
Para Tangokinesis está preparando un nuevo programa con el cual celebrará los 15 años de trayectoria de su Compañía.

ANA MARIA STEKELMAN

Ana Maria Stekelman studied Modern Dance in Buenos Aires with Paulina Ossona and Renate Schottelius and in New York in the Martha Graham Dance School.  In 1968 she joined the School of Dance of Oscar Araiz and in 1972 the Opera College (Dance and Music Research). She was a founder member of the San Martin Theatre Contemporary Ballet and she was Artistic Director of that Company since 1977 to 1981 and again since 1988 to 1990. She was invited to the American Dance Festival in 1976, 1978 and 1990. After creating her Company "Tangokinesis" she deepened her research into the fusion of Tango with modern Dance. With that she toured the world performing in the most important festivals, such as: Jerusalem, Autumn Festival in Madrid, Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, Colorado Dance Festival, American Dance Festival, World Financial Center in New York, and twice at the Kennedy Center. She was the only Argentine Choreographer invited to close the Festival of Avignon in the Coeur d'honneur del Palais des Papes (1999). She presented her Company together with Julio Bocca at the Paris' Opera Garnier, performing the worldwide preview of "Consagración del Tango" (Tango's Consecration). Ana Maria Stekelman created pieces for different ballets in the world, among them, the Ballet Stagium of Brazil, Ballet du Nord in France, Ballet dell' Opera of Rome, National Ballet of Chile, and the Ballet of the Colon Theatre of Buenos Aires. She created several works for the foremost international dancer Julio Bocca: "Concertango", "Consagración del Tango", "Mambo Suite", "Piazzolla Tango Vivo"; “Bocca Tango", “Repercusiones”, “El hombre de la corbata roja”.  Ana Maria Stekelman was asked by Carlos Saura to choreograph some scenes for the film "Tango", for which she was awarded the American Choreography Award in Los Angeles, U.S.A.
In April 2002 her Company Tangokinesis was selected to star in the Documentary film “Tango Désir” produced by the French Channel Arte.
In September 2003 Tangokinesis was invited by the Hebbel Theatre to perform at the Marlene Dietrich Square, Potsdamer Platz in Berlin with the program “Tango, Vals, Tango”.
In December 2003 – January 2004 returned to the U.S.A. togheter with her Company to perform at the Kravis Center at West Palm Beach and a One World Theatre of Austin, Texas.
In February 2004 she did a tour of Italy with Tangokinesis. In June returned to the same country to present “Tango, Vals, Tango” at the Teatro Bellini of Catania. In June she previewed the piece “Bésame” (“Kiss me”) for Contemporary Dance Ballet of the Teatro San Martín of Buenos Aires City. In August 2004 opens in Hannover, Germany, the opera “Tango mon amour” by Jorge Zulueta and Jacobo Romano, with the actress Hanna Schygulla in the leading role and with the dancers from the Tangokinesis Company, where she is in charge of the Choreography Direction.
In November 2004 she previewed at the Maipo Theater “Lentejuelas-Gershwintango” a work created for her Company which was also performed at the Buenos Aires International Dance Festival in December where she also previewed Ravel’s “Bolero”.
In March 2005 she toured Italy with her Company. In May the same year she was invited by the Classic and Contemporary Ballet of Asuncion, Paraguay, for the reposition of her work “Bésame”.
She was also invited by the renown Jacob’s Pillow Festival to travel to Massachussets , U.S.A. in August to run a course of Contemporary Dance within the framework of the Jazz Program directed by Chet Walker.
In August her Company Tangokinesis previewed at the Maipo Theater, in Buenos Aires a new program made up of three of Stekelman’s works: “Garello Tango”, “Cotillón” and “Bolero”.
In October Julio Bocca previewed two works created by Stekelman: “Cruz y Ficción” and “Tango Brujo”. Also in October was the preview of “Bathory” a story based on the Countess of the same name which the Choreographer tells through three characters.
In 2006 Ana María Stekelman traveled to Rome, Italy, engaged by the Director Alfredo Arias to take charge of the Choreographic Direction of the Opera “Dracula in love”.
In March 2006 her company did a Tour of the U.S.A. and Canada.
In August 2006 she travelled to Versailles to take charge of the Choreographic Direction of “Las Bodas del Rey Niño” with the General Direction of Alfredo Arias.
Stekelman was called again by Julio Bocca to choreograph “Adiós Hermano Cruel” which opened in 2006. Julio Bocca, the foremost Argentine Dancer will finish his brilliant career performing this work.
In November 2006 Stekelman started with the choreographic Direction of the film “La Bella Otero”, Spanish – Argentine co-production under the direction of the Spanish filmmaker Jordi Frades.
In April 2007, with her company Tangokinesis did a tour through the North of Italy which finished in Germany at the Tanzhaus Theater in Düsseldorf.
In June this year Stekelman  previewed at the Maipo Theatre in Buenos Aires a 3 piece – program created for her Company: “Concierto de Nácar”, “Tangokinesis Molpai” (Homage to Ted Shawn) and “El Desfile”.
In July she returned to Italy with her Company to perform  in Rome, Naples and Florence, among other cities of that country.
In August she traveled to France invited by Europa Danse to do a creation of “Pulcinella” (this work was created for Les Ballets Russes in 1920, with music by Pergolese arranged by Igor Stravinsky and with stage design and costumes done by Pablo Picasso). Europa Danse is a ballet made up by the most brilliant young dancers selected from 10 European countries.
In September her Company did a tour in Greece and in October toured through Mexico.
She begun 2008 working in a new piece “Felicitas” to the Ballet Argentino, It will be opened in May in the Opera Theater in Buenos Aires city.
She is creating the scenes for the film TETRO to the film maker  Francis Ford Coppola.
She is preparing a new program for her Company to celebrate the 15 years of Tangokinesis.
In April she will travel with her Company to Montevideo, Uruguay. There they will perform at Solis Theater.
In May her company will do an special perform at Panamericano Hotel in Bariloche city.
In May Ana María Stekelman will travel specially invited for the PRIX BENOIS DE LA DANSE´organizing committee, for her ballet “Adios Hermano Cruel”. The ceremony will take place on 6 May, at the Bolshoi Theatre  in Moscow.
